What to expect in therapy

How do I know if I need therapy?

People often start therapy when emotional pain or stress is getting in the way of relationships, work or education, or living the life they want. Therapy may help you manage specific life stressors or circumstances or address underlying issues like anxiety or depression.

What happens in the initial session?

The first session is a chance for you to share what brings you into therapy. I will also ask you to share more general information about your life—social, occupational/educational, living, emotional, physical, and spiritual aspects. You can ask me any questions you have about the process. We will work together to come up with a roadmap to help you achieve your goals.

What is therapy like?

Therapy is different for each person, but you can expect to talk about your current challenges, relevant personal history, and changes you notice from week to week. Therapy sessions are generally 45-55 minutes long. Expect to make regular therapy appointments.

What about confidentiality?

We will go over confidentiality in detail during your first session. In general, information shared in therapy is considered confidential. Exceptions are made for safety reasons and insurance and billing.

How do I start therapy?

Contact me via email or phone to let me know you are interested in starting therapy. Email is the best way to get in touch with me. We will set up a time for a brief phone consultation. During that phone call, we can discuss what brings you to therapy and what I may be able to offer you.

How long will I need to be in therapy?

The length of therapy depends on your particular stressors and how the process of change works for you. People often start a more intensive course of treatment meeting weekly or every other week and then tapering off as stressors resolve.
